HUD Met the Requirements of the Geospatial Data Act of 2018, But Some Improvements Are Needed

HUD has met all 13 responsibilities of the Act as part of the implementation phase. However, for four of the 13 responsibilities, specifically the responsibilities related to HUD’s Geospatial Strategic Plan, NARA approved record schedules, metadata standards, and the geospatial information it makes available to the public, we identified actions that HUD should take to improve their controls and metadata. All the covered agencies, including HUD, remain in the implementation stage of the Act until the Federal Geographic Data Committee establishes formal standards for compliance with the responsibilities stated in the Act. Taking these actions will help ensure HUD meets the responsibilities of the Act once implemented. HUD’s continued efforts towards meeting all 13 responsibilities promote transparency and accountability toward achieving the Act’s purpose to minimize duplication of geospatial activities across agencies, improve collaboration, and provide accurate geospatial information to stakeholders.
